@Paul Ryan How will you protect a woman’s right to a safe, legal abortion?

@Peanut what is life and when does it begin?

I’m not here to debate philosophy, I’m here to debate policy. An abortion is a very personal choice that the government needs to protect. The government has no business regulating the bodily autonomy of a woman, I am committed to protecting that right, but as of now I cannot say the same of my opponent.

I do not support abortion
Children should have someone to speak for their right to life

@Paul Ryan What role do you believe the Federal Government has in protecting unborn children's right to life?
@Peanut What is your public stance on the infamous trolley problem? What is your stance on the current President?

@Putbye1 Again, I am not here to debate philosophy, but I will say that I think the trolley problem is a great measure of what is best to do in an objectively terrible situation. As for your second question, I believe that Presidentess Valerie is certainly qualified for her position, but I'm afraid we agree very little on policy, and I am certainly wary of the dirty tricks that parties she is a part of seem to constantly be playing. However, I know she is a competent executive and I do trust that she actually cares for the people, which is more than I can say for my current opponent, who has just demonstrated his lack of care and respect for the autonomy of women.

What are your opinions on the death penalty? (edited)

Was the use of the death penalty on Nazi war criminals justified?

Peanut 07-Mar-20 04:16 PM
@Anarchist I am opposed to the death penalty in all cases. Yes, there are some truly, truly terrible people in the world, but an eye for an eye leaves both blind. Additionally, according to a study released in April 2014. At least 4.1% of all those executed on death row were likely innocent. Some of those on the opposite side of the aisle have used the concept of innocence to justify the death penalty while opposing abortions, yet when dozens of innocents have been wrongfully murdered by the state, we are to turn a blind eye to such a gross injustice? I think not. The death penalty is immoral, and while my opponent and I may disagree on where life "begins" I recognize that no innocent person deserves to be murdered. I would also remind my opponents and those on the right waxing poetic about the sanctity of life that most abortions performed in the third trimester (when a fetus is viable to live outside of the womb) are only in cases where the life of the mother is threatened, or if the baby is stillborn.
Here's the study that I cited: https://www.pnas.org/content/111/20/7230
The rate of erroneous conviction of innocent criminal defendants is often described as not merely unknown but unknowable. We use survival analysis to model this effect, and estimate that if all death-sentenced defendants remained under sentence of death indefinitely at least 4...

What is your opinion on the distribution of narcotics across the southern border, and what do you plan to do about it?
Avatar
Peanut 07-Mar-20 05:13 PM
@rat randy fantastic question! The War on Drugs has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster. I think the decriminalization of drug possession was a great first step, because the fact of the matter is people are going to end up using drugs. I would rather the government foster a spirit of regulation, rehabilitation, and cooperation, than continuing to allow the violence that afflicts our southern border. The people of New York are all too familiar with the devastating effects of both the War on Drugs and the Drugs impacting our communities. What we need to do is allow private businesses to sell recreational drugs at prices that severely undercut the cartels, and work with the Central American governments to ensure that the Cartel heads are brought to justice. If we undercut the profit motive, we will de-incentivize the brutality in pursuit of profit that has afflicted Central America. We also need to recognize the role of the United States government in causing this conflict in the first place. We need to work with our Latin American allies to uplift the impoverished, not continue to condemn them to a life of suffering and misery.

@Peanut What drugs do you think should be legal, and which should be illegal, if any?
Avatar
Peanut 07-Mar-20 05:49 PM
Currently, all drugs have been decriminalized, and I fully support that.
We need to combat addiction with compassion, not incarceration.

Do you think the government should force drug users to go to rehabilitation?
Avatar
Peanut 07-Mar-20 05:53 PM
I think the government should provide all the services necessary for a healthy rehabilitation process. I wouldn't say "force," but we do need to create a community of love and empathy, not hatred and ignorance.

Do you plan on doing anything about Daylight savings, or is it alright to you as it stands?
Avatar
Peanut 08-Mar-20 12:28 PM
@Ethora Personally, I think our immigration platform is a smidge too harsh, and I would like to see more of an emphasis on getting a path toward citizenship, as well as protecting undocumented individuals who are trying to make a living for themselves and their families. I think paths to citizenship are far more important than secure borders, and I would support efforts to make a path more tenable. @rat randy Daylight Savings is archaic and should be done away with
in fact, we already did do something about Daylight savings
the concept of springing forward and falling back is gone, and I would like to keep it that way

Question for all Candidates: Do you support implementing a Universal Basic Income nationwide?

I don't support a UBI that targets social safety nets, but I would be in support of one that kept all other safety nets in place, as well.
