His parents were James and Patricia Smith, an auto mechanic and elementary school teacher respectively. His father also fought in the Vietnam War, earning a Purple heart in the process. He attended Texas A&M University where he received a bachelor’s degree in History in ~~2002~~. He then attended a graduate program at Baylor University where he received a master’s degree in ~~2004~~ and attempted to pursue a PhD. Monetary issues made this difficult and he was forced to put his plans on hold until he could pay off his student loans and afford to finish the courses. He then became a high school history teacher in his hometown. While in Waco, he met and married his wife Sandra Smith in ~~2006~~. He inherited a 25 acre ranch near Waco from his grandfather in 2014, where he and Sandra live today. From his childhood many saw him as politically minded, and he did express interest ~~and~~ in joining politics many times.
