Garland was subsequently hired by Merrill Lynch, working in the investment management department, as a portfolio manager until 2014.

Garland is married to Estefânia "Stephanie" Chaves Fernandes, a private practice physician in Orange County, New York. The couple were introduced by a mutual friend during a business trip to São Paulo, Stephanie is Brazilian-American. Stephanie has been considered to be a vital part of the numerous political campaigns, including Lyndon's 2019 Presidential Bid. The couple has two children, Maria and Christopher, twins born in 2010.
