The Progressive Party was founded by Butterlands after he became dissatisfied with the Communist Party's focus on the Northern State, the inability of the Democratic and Communist parties to cooperate with each other, and the politicisation of non-political institutions like the Supreme Court. Butterlands ran as a Progressive in the June presidential election.
