Family and Personal Life
Early Life and Education
Jonathan “John” Adams Darby was born in Lenox Hill Hospital November 18, 1974 to Sarah Darby (née Feinstein), a teacher, and Samuel “Sam” Darby, a train conductor for the Long Island Rail Road. His family shortly moved to Jericho, Long Island, where he and his other two siblings (Sydney Simmons, born 1977 and is Superintendent of Huntington Public Schools, and Abigail Barrison, born 1973 and is a history teacher) attended public school. He graduated from Jericho High School as salutatorian 1992. In Jericho Schools, teachers repeatedly said he excelled in History, Social Studies, and Home Economics. He received a bachelors in Urban Science at MIT in 1996, and a graduated with degree in law at NYU in 1999, magna cum laude. At NYU, he joined Kappa Sigma.
Family
Darby’s father, Sam, was born October 16, 1945 in Flushing Hospital. He graduated Flushing High School in 1963. He was hired as an intern at the Long Island Rail Road shortly after and quickly moved his way up to train conductor. Darby’s mother, Sarah was born June 21, 1946 in Coney Island Hospital and grew up in nearby Sheepshead Bay. She graduated from Sheepshead Bay High School the year 1964, and went on to receive a bachelors in education at City College, graduating 1968. She got a job at a school in Forest Hills a few months later. Sam and Sarah met a Manhattan restaurant and started dating in November of 1968. Sam proposed to Sarah in March of 1972, and they married a year later. They retired the same year-2007 and moved to a condo in Maui, Hawaii, Jefferson.
Darby met his future wife, Jennifer Darby (née Jackson), while he was working at the New York City Department of Planning in July of 2000. His wife, an attorney, was looking for certain documents and John was to work with her. Thus, a relationship was born. John proposed to her in Central Park in May of 2003, and they married a year later. They have two children, Thomas (born 2005) and Abby (born 2007). Their Washington home is along the H Street Corridor, and their North home is in Nassau County. They are both non-religious.
Career
Early Careers
In 7th Grade, Darby took a career test, and the results showed he should pursue a job in government and/or law. When he was 16, 17, and 18, he interned at Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Museums during the summer. When he headed off to MIT, he worked in the MIT Mail Room, and when he came back to NYU, he worked in Lower Manhattan at the MTA Headquarters. After graduating in 1999, he went to work at the New York City Department of Planning, where he met his future-wife Jennifer, but was laid off in 2005 in midst of the financial crisis sweeping the nation.
Becoming a Representative
After being laid off, Darby landed a job in the State of North’s Attorney General’s office as a lawyer. He stayed in this job until 2016, where he retired early and wrote his New York Times Bestselling Biography on Richard Nixon, Watergate: The story of a Politician. In September 2019, he ran unsuccessfully for representative of JF-05 on the Labor Party Ticket. In late October 2019, he returned back into the spotlight and ran successfully as representative for NS-05 and won. He is the current seat for this position.
Being a Representative
Darby was sworn in as representative on November 7, 2019. He was appointed chair of the House Commerce, Education, and Infrastructure Committee, and a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. He has introduced numerous bills to the house, including the Prevention of Marriage of Children Act, which would ban child marriage and give justice to those who were forced into child marriage, the No Corporal Punishment in Schools Act, which failed after certain Federalist Party representatives didn’t see how it was constitutional, and the Codegreen Personal Hygiene Products Act, which would require all federal buildings to supply basic personal hygiene products in restrooms.
Personal Life
Darby’s maternal side of the family is of German descent and his paternal side of the family is of Italian descent. His wife of 15 years, Jennifer, is of Irish descent and is still a self-employed attorney for criminal justice, and runs a firm of approximately 60 people. His son, Thomas, was born in 2005 and is currently in the 9th Grade, and his younger daughter Abby, was born in 2007 and is currently in the 7th Grade. Both are Straight-A students and attend school in New York, North.
