The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award created by President Kennedy in 1963, bestowed by the President of the United States, to recognize “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” It and the Congressional Gold Medal are the senior-most awards of the federal government.
